About us

In 2002 Ericsson, then a major telecommunications equipment supplier, decided to leave The Netherlands. A number of their Dutch R&D staff decided to continue on their own and in 2003 they founded the Twente Institute for Wireless and Mobile Communications, WMC. We consider WMC to be a spin-off of Ericsson.

WMC has grown steadily through the collapse of the Internet bubble, the banking crisis and now the Euro crisis. Currently, the WMC technical staff has a strength of a dozen engineers. WMC is constantly looking for highly qualified engineers to help with its projects. See the ‘Vacancies’ page.

This growth happened in a very competitive market and in adverse economic conditions. This growth has been possible because WMC truly is an R&D organization:

Research

WMC has from its birth insisted on being at the forefront of developments in wireless and mobile communications.

By participating in many research projects its staff picked up and contributed to the newest developments. This also led to a number of publications: books, articles etc. by some of WMC's staff.

Development

The knowledge that WMC has available, resulted time and again in innovative and practical communications solutions, of which FIGO is so important as to merit its own page on this website.
